A few facts about power consumption of laser & inkjet printers
Not only CPU's and monitors top the list of appliances consuming maximum energy; inkjet printers and laser printers too are not far behind. At the time of use, laser printer consumes around 100 watts of power and inkjet printers consume 12 watts while operating.
* Measures to reduce the power consumption of your printer
Bring home a printer having Energy Star Stamp. This star stamp is a program initiated by US Environment Protection Agency as well as US Department of Energy. Under this program, only equipment and appliances that have been proved energy efficient are passed. So, printer be it inkjet or laser that has this stamp consumes less energy. Basically, such printers go into hibernation or sleep mode, thus resulting in lower energy consumption.
* Use the printer on power saving mode. As per Energy Star, printer on power saving mode consumes less energy. But, this also depends on the speed of the printer. Printers that have speed between 0-10 ipm must be set on 30 minutes turn off mode, while the ones with 11-20 ipm speed should be set on 60 minutes turn off mode. Inkjet or laser printers that have speed of 55 ipm must be set on 90 minutes for turn off.
* Turn off the printer when it is not in use. Appoint someone to turn off the printer when no one is using it. And ones using printer at home, must turn it off properly.
* It is better to use the Duplex attribute of printer. When you use Duplex copying feature, less energy is used as compared to single-sided copying. So, save energy by using duplex copying. This way, you not only save energy but also save paper.
